Purchasing Songs Online...

The site will support purchasing with credit cards. What we want to know is how you think it should be done. Right now, the idea is to take the users credit card info and securly store it. The user then downloads as many songs as he wants and will be charged at the end of the month for what he downloads. This will decrease the amount of transactions necessary by a large amount.

What do you think? Would you do it differently?

I could see myself getting carried away and then surprised by the bill I get at the end of the month. I'd be pissed you scammed me with such a practice (even though it was totally my fault because you made things perfectly clear.) and never use the service again.

I just like putting down a chunk of change at a time, say $20 or $40, and seeing how many megabytes of music that gets me.

mdtolic,

Thanks for the feedback. The pre-paid option is one that we are looking into as well. There might be some hurdles with this, but it is definetely considering.

Thanks.

I'd like to echo mdtolic's comment. The advantage to allowing the user to top up an account is that then, purchasing a song is not really "spending" money. After all, the money was already committed when you deposited it into your account. Particularly if the tracks are kept at a low enough price that you barely notice a purchase's effect on your account (say, 10 to 25 cents) then the net result is that everyone spends more freely and there is much more money that ends up going to the artist.

I have seen this work before with online games and it was very effective. It is also the way I pay for VoIP long distance service. The cost of every call is extremely low, my account is kept around $80 which lasts me for several months, and I never ever think about the cost of a call.

I think this is the smartest way there is to support micropayments, and I don't understand why everyone doesn't do it.

bruce, mdtolic. Thanks again for your comments. We really like the idea of a pre-paid system (cause you brought up a good point). This would indeed increase the users propensity to support the artist, because afterall, the money is already spent.

We will keep you posted.
